Fire pit dimensions are measured from the outside of the ring so keep in mind that the interior of the fire pit will be smaller than 3 6 feet depending on the thickness of your fire pit ring.

Pour a generous amount of crushed gravel paver base into the hole so your finished base will be approximately five inches thick.
Arrange the stones in a circle to make the fire ring on top of your gravel and sand base making sure that your first layer of blocks is secure and level.
Add a few inches of lava rocks to hold the bricks in place.
